Ruger’s “Top 10s” Touted In July’s GUNS Magazine

The popularity of the 10mm cartridge has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years and inside the July issue of GUNS Magazine, resident “sixgunner” John Taffin reveals why Ruger’s SR1911 and Super Redhawk rank among the “top of the 10s.”

With the features and details you’d expect from Ruger, Taffin’s SR1911 test gun delivered equally impressive results from 19 factory loads and six handloads. Cor-Bon’s 150-gr. JHP proved to be the velocity champ at 1,400 fps and was also exceptionally accurate with a 1-inch group of five shots at 20 yards.

“With the SR1911 we basically have everything we could want in a 10mm. It can be carried all day, yet still be able to handle anything encountered,” Taffin offers.

Confidence runs high from Thompson/Center Arms: The T/C 6.5 Creedmoor Compass is guaranteed to deliver 3-shot, MOA-size groups at 100 yards using premium ammunition. Up for the challenge, Holt Bodinson ran 140-gr. loads from American Eagle, Hornady, HSM and Nosler through the Compass and achieved “remarkable” results.

“When I use the term ‘remarkable,’ I mean it. Here’s an out-of-the-box rifle, retailing for $360 with no break-in period, delivering sub-MOA accuracy with four brands of ammo. T/C’s factory MOA guarantee isn’t a gimmick,” he informs.

This month’s GUNS Giveaway package has it all! Topping the prizes is a Mossberg 590M Heat Shield. The 12-ga. shotgun offers rapid reloading and unloading, and increased capacity without additional magazine tube length. A Spyderco Shaman knife, Hayden sunglasses from Wiley X and Mission Critical MC-10 cleaner and lubricant round out the package worth $1,280.94. Shari LeGate wonders (and discovers) if applying shotgun fundamentals to pistol shooting works in the “Game On” column. And in “Out Of The Box,” S&W’s Model 340 PD proves to be a “magnumized” workhorse in a compact package.
