For the fifth year in a row, Team EOTAC's Robert Vogel has claimed a championship title at the U.S. Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) Indiana Sectionals taking top honors this year in the Limited-10 division. Since 2005, when he won the Limited title, Vogel has dominated the match. For the last three years it was in the Production division where Vogel has risen to become not just one of the top shooters in the country but the national champion in 2008.

The "No Name" high capacity 9mm pistol from Wilson Combat now has a name: SPEC OPS 9. The name was selected from suggestions received for the past several months. Douglas Ervin suggested the name that was selected and, for his prize, receives a Wilson Combat pistol.

The AP reported that Navy Medal of Honor winner George E. Wahlen, age 84, died last Friday. Mr. Wahlen was a corpsman in WWII who won his medal for actions taken on Iwo Jima. He was hit by enemy fire three times over a week in 1945 while advancing forward of the front lines to aid wounded Marines. He stayed in the fight in spite of his injuries and was awarded the MOH by President Harry S. Truman. The Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salt Lake City was named for the Navy hero. It's the location where he passed from lung cancer. Rest in Peace. Mr. Wahlen's citation appears at this link

The definition of a switchblade or automatic knife has been clear and explicit in federal law since 1958. There have been several state court cases that have ruled they are not switchblades because they do not possess an activating button on the handle. U.S. Custom's proposal would bypass Congress and expand the switchblade definition to include all knives that open with one hand. These include multi-tools, traditional pocket knives, one-hand openers, and assisted-openers.

SIG SAUER's Team SIG Champion, Max Michel, competed in the 2009 NRA Bianchi Cup Pro-Am shooting event on Saturday May 23, 2009 and took home the High-Overall score. In this, his first of this kind of event, Max competed against the industry's top professional shooters, as well as, celebrity shooters and country music stars Mark Wills and Michael Petersen. Having no experience in the Bianchi Cup Celebrity Pro-Am Shoot did not impede Max's shooting ability as he easily broke the NRA Speed Shoot-Off Event Record and then went on to break his own new record two more times before completing the event. Max Michel, using his SIG SAUER 1911, knocked down five steel targets of various heights at ten yards, and walked away with the fasted time in Bianchi Cup history of 1.70 seconds.

In other news, a newswire editor position and a web designer position is now open at the Outdoor Wire Digital Networks . . . or should be. In last Thursday's Wire, a communications glitch of global proportions lead to a mistaken headline. The story was correct, the headline not so much. Frank James, author of Effective Handgun Defense and Heckler & Koch's MP5 Submachine Gun as well as many articles for firearms publications, is thankfully still with us. Frank is also co-author of the intensely personal story The Journey is More Than the Destination, a book about the loss of his daughter and how he and his wife Cathy learned to manage grief. A great friend, top gun expert and genuinely wonderful human being, Frank engages in the most dangerous occupation in America, farming. Safariland, a BAE Systems line of business, announced today that it is one of the first body armor manufacturers to satisfy the requirements of the National Institute of Justice's (NIJ) new Voluntary Body Armor Compliance Testing Program under NIJ Standard-0101.06 (NIJ-06). Safariland's XT-700 Type II (#BA-2000S-FC01) and XT-300 Type IIIA (#BA-3A00S-BR01) models have been determined by the NIJ to comply with the new NIJ-06 standard. Both models are part of Safariland's XT‑Series of concealable body armor, and are now available for immediate purchase. As of this date, these are the only Threat Level II and Threat Level IIIA vests that have been authorized by NIJ under the new NIJ-06 standard.

Frank James, firearms expert, author, and all-around great guy reported in his blog -- ,"Corn, beans, spent brass, an empty page and a deadline" - the loss of firearms print media legend Jack Lewis. He passed away May 24, 2009. Frank's blog, which can be seen at http://www.frankwjames.blogspot.com/, has a colorful description of Jack's life. For the few in the industry who didn't know, he was a founder of GUN WORLD Magazine and Gallant Charger Publications. Among the legendary writers he employed were Dean Grennell, Tom Ferguson, Massad Ayoob and our own Frank James. There was great information imparted in publications Jack edited, published and wrote. He also had great stories of the Hollywood film industry of the mid-20th Century as told by a participant. Time stops for no one and nothing is forever. Jack Lewis, his magazine titles, writers and their stories will be in our memories. If you didn't know anything of Jack Lewis, Frank's farewell is a must read. If you read the old GUN WORLD Magazine, or just saw Jack at the SHOT Show, you owe it to yourself to read about him. Jack was truly unique.
