Sept. GUNS Features Custom Cylinder & Slide SA-35s

The Cylinder & Slide shop is the go-to place to get what you need to keep your Hi-Power running. For the September GUNS Magazine cover guns, C&S ace gunsmith Ralph Gutekunst worked his magic on two SA-35s. FMG Special Projects Editor Roy Huntington notes, “Aside from looking like a million bucks, the inside of the guns got special treatment, too.”

Among the customizations, the upgraded sights include Heinie Ledge rear sights and C&S dovetailed fronts with 14 kt. gold beads installed. The impeccable C&S beavertail allows a high and tight grip and really locks the gun into the hand, and the match-grade barrel with hood and throated feed ramp helps make the guns shoot like “gangbusters.” “Owning a true custom gun built to your wishes and dreams is great fun. It enhances a base gun, generating big numbers on the fun scale when you shoot it, show it off or just gaze at it. There’s a reason people buy a Mercedes — while still having a Ford truck in the carport too,” Huntington concludes.

According to Will Dabbs, MD, anything worth doing is worth doing excessively. Cast in point: The Heritage Barkeep Boot sports a 1" barrel on a bird’s-head frame and “bewildering array of grip options.” Of the miniscule revolver, he lends, “The real practical application I see for the Boot is as a snake gun. In the Deep South, we are blessed with poisonous snakes aplenty. The Boot is cheap enough to keep in your tackle box. Stoke the rascal with rat shot and it would be just the ticket for sending water moccasins to snake heaven while out drowning crickets for bream.”

Mossberg’s 940 Pro Tactical 12-ga. shotgun tops the Sept. Gun of the Month giveaway package. The 940 Pro Tactical delivers ease of operation, reliability, adjustability and performance-driven features including optic-ready receiver, oversized controls, M-LOK compatibility, stock adjustability and an 18.5" barrel with interchangeable choke system. The winner will also receive a Defender P15 light from AceBeam and a Deschutes Caper fixed-blade knife from Kershaw Knives. The prize package is valued at nearly $1,250. Readers are encouraged to enter the free drawing online at GunsMagazine.com/giveaways.

Other points of interest in GUNS Sept. include four easy steps for not ruining a shotgun barrel, from Tom Keer in the Shotguns column: “Win The Battle Of The Bulge.” Complementing the cover story, Jeff “Tank” Hoover provides instructions for making cast loads (read: a less expensive alternative for practice loads) for the Springfield SA-35 in the Think Thank installment. For those who want to be good rifle shots, learning trigger management is essential. Dave Anderson explains why trigger control is simple enough in theory, but quite difficult in practice — and practice you must — in the Rifles column.
