Taylor’s & Co. Model 1892 In June GUNS

“Self-defense at home? Check. Taking a deer for the freezer? Check again. Easily stowed in a truck or plane? Yup. Stuffed into a backpack ‘just in case?’ Done,” summarizes Roy Huntington of Taylor’s & Company Model 1892 Alaskan Takedown .357 Magnum rifle featured in June GUNS.

Roy contends the Takedown’s features and accuracy make it a great “rabbit load” or useful to teach a new shooter about lever guns. The 16" half-octagonal barrel is threaded and comes with a thread protector installed. The D-shaped level isn’t “too” open, the supplied sight rail accepts Weaver #61 bases, the trigger feels “nice” at 4.5 lbs. and take down is “easy and clever.”

According to Jeremy D. Clough, Rock Island Armory’s XT overcomes the significant functional challenges presented by the .22 Magnum cartridge by using a clever adaptation of an old Colt feature, the “floating” chamber. As he notes, “A 15-shot Magnum makes a compelling argument for itself in either the survival or small-game hunting roles, or just for enjoyable shooting. Rock Island’s XT will do all of it well.”

From Volquartsen Firearms, the VT2 Takedown Rifle tops June’s Firearms Package Giveaway. Built for 22 WMR and 17 HMR with a change of the barrel, the rifle boasts a unique button and lever combination for easy takedown and reassembly. The lucky winner will also receive a 5.11 Tactical Rapid Sling Pack and Radar knife from Kershaw Knives. Valued at $3,076.99, readers are encouraged to enter the free drawing online at GunsMagazine.com/giveaways.

Elsewhere in the June issue, Tom Keer delivers “6 Ways To Hit More Birds” (because missing birds is never fun) in the Shotguns column. Wayne van Zwoll highlights the latest and greatest in optics that debuted at SHOT Show 2023, including entrants from Burris, Leica and Zeiss, in the Optics installment, “Shot Glass.” And in GUNS Insider, Editor Brent T. Wheat explains the basics — and necessities — of holster retention (psst, it’s not just for cops!) in “Don’t Lose It!”
